- AKC 2006 Junior Scholarship Awards -
[Wednesday, May 03, 2006]
New York, NY – The American Kennel Club today announced that 33 Junior Scholarships have been awarded to students from 26 states. The scholarships for high school, college and graduate school students range from $1,000 to $5,000 each for a total of $50,000.
"The Junior Scholarship program is a special way for AKC to honor the hard work and dedication of young fanciers who are tomorrow's leaders of our sport," said Mari-Beth O'Neill, AVP of Special Services. "We are impressed with the vast experience and levels of success, both in the sport and academically, that this year's applicants have achieved."
Applicants were evaluated based on academic history and involvement in the sport of purebred dogs with special consideration for those who were active in AKC clubs and events. In addition, each of the 87 applicants were required to submit an essay describing their experience in the fancy, the significance of the sport in their lives and ways in which they have been an ambassador for purebred dogs in their schools and communities.
The 33 recipients represent a cross section of the fancy today, with participation in every AKC event offered to date. Students range from third and fourth generation exhibitors to those who found their way to their first dog events by chance. Their achievements include winning the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Junior Showmanship Competition, participating in the AKC National Agility Championship, National Merit Scholars, Class Valedictorians and 4H Grand Champions. Future aspirations of this year's winners include going on to veterinary school, dental school, forensic research, law school, business and teaching.
